I hit 100 episodes of the Alpha Quorum podcast and I was proud. I had been on nearly every single one of them. I had poured time, money, and a lot of myself into that work. And then someone casually recommended an episode to me, episode 30, and I realized I had never listened to it. I was out of town when we recorded it, and I just never went back. Men had told me that episode changed their life. I had never heard it.
The Lessons You Skip Past
There is something humbling about that. You can be surrounded by wisdom and still miss it. You can help build something valuable and never fully take it in yourself. I had personal conversations with the man featured in that episode. I thought I knew his story. But hearing him tell it in his own voice, unfiltered, teaching in the way he does, that was something different. Something I had walked right past.
That happens in life all the time. The best lesson in the room is the one you are not paying attention to. The conversation that could shift something in you is the one you tuned out because you assumed you already knew enough. The book on your shelf you never opened. The guy in your group who said something you half-listened to. We are all doing this constantly.
Pride is sneaky. It does not always show up as arrogance. Sometimes it shows up as comfort. You feel like you have enough context, enough experience, enough background. So you stop fully listening. You stop going back to the things that could teach you something. You assume that because you were present, you were paying attention.
Go Back and Get What You Missed
The thought that stuck with me that night was simple: slow down and look around. There is probably something close to you right now, something you have already been exposed to, that has more to offer than you have taken from it yet. Go back to it.
That might mean rereading something. Listening to something again. Asking a question you assumed you already knew the answer to. Sitting with a man in your life and actually listening instead of just waiting for your turn to talk.
Discernment, one of the core qualities I talk about in the Red9, is not just about seeing what is ahead. It is about recognizing what has already been placed in your path that you passed over. A discerning man takes inventory. He checks what he missed. He goes back.
A hundred episodes in, and the lesson I needed most was in episode 30. Go find your episode 30. It has been waiting.
