For 25+ years I've helped people build stronger character, healthier relationships, and lives they respect — through therapy, coaching, and writing.

Most men are carrying a hole in the heart they have never named. A quiet emptiness. A low grade ache that something is missing, even on the days when everything on paper looks fine. And most of us spend years trying to fill it with the wrong things, because nobody ever taught us what the ache was actually for.

The Wrong Things We Reach For

We reach for whatever numbs it fastest. The bottle. The screen. The endless scroll. The conquest. The constant noise that keeps us from sitting alone with ourselves for more than a few minutes at a time. None of it works for long, and deep down you already know that, because none of it ever touches the actual wound. You cannot fill a soul sized hole with comfort sized substitutes. You can only keep buying a little quiet and then watching the ache come back louder than before.

Here is the hard truth I have learned, both in my own life and across two decades of helping men heal. The emptiness is not a defect to be medicated. It is a signal, and it is working exactly as designed. It is pointing you toward the things you were actually built for. Purpose. Brotherhood. Growth. Contribution. Reverence for something bigger than yourself. The ache is not your enemy. It is a compass, and you have been treating the compass like a disease.

The Heart Fills When It Is Used

The same way muscle only grows when it is worked, the heart only fills when it is used. Poured out on a mission that costs you something. Spent on people who genuinely need you. Invested in becoming the man you were created to be instead of the man your appetites would settle for. The void shrinks not when you distract yourself from it, but when you finally put your life to work on something that matters.

So stop trying to plug the hole. You will never out scroll it, out drink it, or out earn it. Start building something worth pouring yourself into instead. Reverence and Distinction, two of the Red9, are about exactly this. Living for more than appetite. Aiming your one life at something higher than the next hit of comfort. That is what finally fills a man up, and nothing smaller ever will.

So answer two honest questions today. What have you been using to numb the ache? And what would it look like to take that same time, money, and energy and pour it into something that actually feeds you instead of something that quietly drains you?
