You would not know it now, but I spent my early years in the weight room. All State in high school, a college football player, a decade of training. And the lesson that stuck with me was never really about the iron. It was about how growth actually works, in a body and in a life.
The Law of Tearing and Atrophy
Muscle gets stronger by being torn. Lift something heavy and the fibers tear a little, and in the healing they come back thicker than before. The reverse is just as true, and it is the part most men ignore until it is too late. When we stop pushing, body, mind, and spirit all atrophy. There is no neutral setting. You are either striving and growing, or coasting and shrinking, and coasting always feels fine right up until you notice how far you have slipped.
After an ACL reconstruction, a long screw in my knee and a ligament rebuilt, I expected to be immobilized on crutches for weeks. My surgeon's instruction stunned me. Walk on it. The research, he explained, supports working through the pain and forcing movement, because the muscle wastes away fast the moment you start protecting it. The thing I assumed would heal me would have actually left me weaker.
I recently sat with a Vietnam veteran living with Parkinson's. This past year he had become wheelchair bound and dependent for nearly everything. My counsel to him and his wife was simple. Have him do everything within his own power that he possibly can. They both admitted he had grown too dependent and had over identified with the disability, and that the excuses had only deepened his depression and his dependence. The less he strived, the more of him disappeared.
Whatever Your Hard Thing Is, Start Today
Life runs on the same law as the gym. To grow and to heal, we have to do hard and uncomfortable things on purpose, accepting temporary discomfort now for a long term payoff later. So here is the application, whatever your hard thing happens to be. Maybe it is admitting past mistakes you have been hiding from. Getting back in the gym, like me. Having the difficult conversation that would finally repair things with someone you love. Laying down the weapons you have been using against other people or against yourself.
Whatever it is, the move is the same. Start today, while it is still only hard and not yet impossible. Do not let your life quietly atrophy one comfortable choice at a time. Pick up the weight. Do the hard thing. That striving is the whole point, and it is the only thing that has ever made a man stronger.
